Spring At Tiny Crickets

Over the next fortnight we are throwing open the doors to spring and diving headfirst into a season full of colour, new life, and exciting discoveries. Our days will be packed with stories, sensory play, creativity, and lots of hands-on fun as children explore what makes spring such a special time of year.

In our Toddler Room children will be introduced to spring colours found in the environment. They will enjoy mixing primary colours together and exploring what happens when colours combine, helping them understand simple cause and effect through hands on play.

We will also be teaching children about different types of flowers, including those we can buy and those we can grow in our gardens. This will support their understanding of the natural world as we begin to notice signs of spring around us.

In our Baby Room children will love decorating their very own daffodils while learning where these cheerful flowers come from and why they are one of the very first signs that spring is on its way. We will be talking about how flowers grow and spotting the bright yellows and greens that begin to appear all around us at this time of year.

Books will be shared throughout our Spring fortnight, with a special focus on springtime stories and tales about baby animals. Together, we will learn about the different sounds animals make and chat about what spring means to us. Children will be encouraged to share their ideas about how spring looks, sounds, and feels, from singing birds to warmer sunshine.

Our babies will be busy planting sunflower seeds, learning all about nature, growth, and caring for living things. They will explore the textures of compost and seeds as they help create our very own little garden, sparking curiosity and sensory exploration.

We will also be creating a spring themed tuff tray bursting with seasonal colours. Children will explore different textures and shades as they play, talk, and investigate, helping to build language, confidence, and sensory awareness.

Stories will inspire even more creativity as we read Jack and the Beanstalk. Children will then create their own beanstalks using a variety of green materials, stretching their imaginations and developing fine motor skills along the way. We will also enjoy an Incy Wincy Spider colour sorting activity, using pom poms to match colours and complete the spider bodies, supporting early colour recognition and hand eye coordination.

Outdoor learning will play a big part too. We will take the babies on a spring walk, noticing the colours on the trees, spotting emerging flowers, and listening carefully to the different songs birds sing.

Children will also be making their own spring lambs using soft cotton wool, while being introduced to new words such as baa, lamb, sheep, soft, and spring. These activities help build vocabulary in a fun and memorable way.

During the fortnight we will also enjoy a sensory day where children explore different states of matter, focusing on solids and liquids and how they feel different in our hands. This playful exploration supports early scientific thinking and sensory development.

It is set to be a joyful, colourful, and curiosity filled fortnight for the whole nursery as we celebrate the magic of spring together.
