Singing & Storytelling: Celebrating World Nursery Rhyme Week

Next week, both rooms will be joining in with World Nursery Rhyme Week, filling our days with singing, storytelling and creative play. Through songs, art and hands-on exploration, the children will bring their favourite rhymes to life while developing early language, rhythm and memory skills in joyful and imaginative ways.

Toddler Room

On Monday, the toddlers will lend a helping hand to poor Humpty Dumpty by creating sticking posters to help put him back together again. Practitioners will encourage the children to talk about where each piece goes, helping them practise their spatial awareness and sequencing while revisiting this much-loved nursery rhyme.

During Tuesday, the children will make bright red poppies for Remembrance Day using paper cupcake cases, red paint and green lolly sticks. As they create, practitioners will talk gently about remembering people who help to keep us safe, while encouraging careful painting and fine motor coordination.

On Wednesday, the children will make cheerful blackbirds to sit in their “Sing a Song of Sixpence” pie. Using paper and other materials, they’ll explore texture while singing along to the rhyme, practising their counting and listening skills as they imagine the birds flying out of a pie.

By Thursday, it will be time to explore Hickory Dickory Dock as the children make their very own clock using a mix of craft materials and junk modelling. They’ll talk about numbers, shapes and time while decorating their clock, supporting early mathematical awareness in a playful and creative way.

To round off the week on Friday, the toddlers will explore an exciting Old MacDonald’s Farm tuff tray filled with toy animals and various farm-themed substrates. They’ll sing the song together, match the animals to their sounds, and enjoy a sensory farmyard adventure full of laughter and learning.

Baby Room

On Monday, the babies will enjoy a water play activity linked to Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Using small boats and water movements, practitioners will sing the song as babies explore the feel of water and the movement of floating toys, supporting sensory awareness and early rhythm.

During Tuesday, the babies will make poppies for Remembrance Day using soft, baby-friendly materials. Practitioners will offer red paper, sponges and fabric for exploration, encouraging babies to press, pat and paint while talking about the colours and shapes they see.

On Wednesday, the babies will create fluffy cotton wool sheep while singing Baa Baa Woolly Sheep. They’ll explore the softness of the woolly texture and practise gentle sticking activities, learning new words and sounds as they bring their sheep pictures to life.

By Thursday, it will be time for Humpty Dumpty fun with a themed tuff tray filled with soft bricks, egg shapes and castle blocks. Practitioners will sing the rhyme as babies explore cause and effect, discovering what happens when Humpty takes a tumble.

To end the week on Friday, the babies will sing Five Green Bottles using hand puppets and props. Practitioners will encourage early counting and number recognition as the babies join in with the song, exploring rhythm, repetition and turn-taking in a playful and engaging way.
