On The Move: Our Summer Journeys

This week we’re continuing our exciting transport theme, exploring all the ways we can travel, move, and zoom! From mark-making with cars to learning Makaton signs and exploring emergency vehicles, the children will be discovering the world of transport through play, creativity, and movement.

Toddler Room

We’ll start the week on Monday by setting up our very own car wash. Using soapy water, sponges and plenty of bubbles, children will clean their garden vehicles and learn about looking after the things we use every day. This is a great opportunity for practicing care, responsibility, and both gross and fine motor skills.

On Tuesday, we’ll be turning our toy cars into art tools. Children will attach crayons to the back of toy vehicles and drive them across large sheets of paper to explore the different marks and patterns they can make. It’s a creative way to explore movement and mark-making while learning through play.

We’ll be adding to our transport vocabulary on Wednesday as we introduce Makaton signs for different types of transport. Through songs, stories and flashcards, children will learn signs for vehicles such as cars, planes, boats and trains, supporting their communication and language in a fun, inclusive way.

Thursday will be all about big movement and summer fun as we enjoy a session with the bouncy castle and paddling pool in the garden. We’ll bounce, splash and climb, burning off lots of energy while building strength and coordination.

To finish off the week on Friday, we’ll be turning our attention to those services that help us by talking about emergency vehicles. We’ll look at photos and models of police cars, ambulances, fire engines and more. We’ll be discussing their colours, sirens, and the important roles they play in our communities.

Baby Room

We’ll begin our week on Monday with a lovely car wash activity in the garden. Babies will help clean our outdoor ride-on vehicles using sponges and bubbly water, developing coordination and enjoying the sensory experience of warm water, soft foam and splashing fun.

On Tuesday, we’ll be learning one of our favourite action songs: The Wheels on the Bus. With plenty of movement, gestures and sound play, we’ll encourage the babies to join in with clapping, swishing and bouncing along with the wheels, wipers and passengers.

Wednesday is all about quiet time and discovery as we share a simple transport-themed book. We’ll explore pictures of cars, bikes, buses and boats, using words and sounds to help babies begin to recognise different types of vehicles and how they’re used.

On Thursday, we are going to have a fun-filled bouncy castle and paddling pool session in the garden. This activity is perfect for building gross motor skills and giving the babies a chance to stretch, splash and bounce in the sunshine.

We’ll end the week on Friday by setting up a special tuff tray filled with emergency vehicles, where babies can explore how to push, park and move small cars around. With fire engines, ambulances and police cars to discover, we’ll talk about sirens, colours and who helps us when there’s an emergency.

Please encourage your child’s learning by discussing any journeys you might take and the modes of transport that you use and see, whether that journey is on a family holiday or going to the supermarket.
