Next week our toddlers and babies will continue their dive into the wonders of the underwater world through colourful crafts, sensory exploration, and playful learning. From sun-catching fish to jellyfish with flowing tentacles, we’ll be learning about sea life in fun, hands-on ways.
Toddler Room
On Monday our toddlers will begin the week by creating their very own sun-catcher sea creatures using a range of colours they choose themselves. As the sun shines through their work, they’ll see how the colours light up and dance across the walls. We’ll talk about how sunlight interacts with transparent materials and how colour can be reflected and changed.
Tuesday is our Playdough Ocean Prints activity. Using shells and toy sea creatures, children will press shapes and textures into playdough to create under-the-sea impressions. This activity encourages intentional mark-making and close observation of patterns and shapes.
When Wednesday comes around we’ll be turning paper plates into turtles using coloured paper and glue. As we build our turtles, we’ll talk about their features—how many legs they have, where the head goes, and what their hard shell is for. A great activity for combining creativity with early science.
Thursday is going to be tasty fun for all as we will be using coloured icing and small sweets to decorate biscuits to look like fish. Children will spoon on the icing and carefully place their Smarties “scales,” developing fine motor skills while enjoying a yummy, creative task.
To finish the week, on Friday children will create octopuses using string and wool, counting out eight legs and talking about what makes an octopus so special. We’ll learn that they can change colour to camouflage, and that they have not one, but three hearts!
Baby Room
On Monday we’ll begin with handprint painting, using gentle colours and paint to create sea creatures on paper. Babies will explore the texture of paint and begin to associate new vocabulary with the shapes they see; like fish, crabs, and turtles.
During Tuesday our sea animals will take a dive into a tray of cornflour sludge. Babies will explore the unique texture of this fascinating material, which changes from solid to liquid depending on how it’s touched: an early sensory science experience.
Wednesday will be our Under the Sea Playdough day, when babies will use rollers, stampers and sea animal shapes to press and explore playdough. This open-ended activity encourages physical development and imaginative play as they create their own little ocean scenes.
Thursday is going to be our Silhouette Sponge Painting activity. Using sea-themed stencils, babies will dab paint around shapes with soft sponges. When the stencil is removed, it reveals a clean shape in the middle. This helps children begin to understand contrast, shape, and early art techniques such as negative space.
To end the week, on Friday we’ll make jellyfish from half paper plates with long, colourful strips of paper and tissue hanging beneath. Babies will feel the different textures and notice how the paper moves when blown or waved, building awareness of material properties and movement.
