Hello to all our Tiny Crickets and their families. It’s been a fabulous week of learning all about different farm animals in the nursery, and we have enjoyed a lot of animal based play and discovery this week.

Over the coming week we will be expanding on this learning, and reinforcing the things that we have explored over the past week.

We are going to be looking at farm vehicles and the machines that help humans work on farms. We will be using junk modelling, and using our painting, glueing and sticking skills to create a big farm tractor from recycled materials.

We’ll also be furthering our learning about animal care. In our play scenario we will talk about how we would care for animals if a farmer was going away on holiday, and what we would do to care for those animals in the farmer’s absence: how we would feed and clean those animals and take care of their needs.

As part of our circle time activities we’ll be discussing the noises that different farm animals make. We’ll be exploring the different volumes of the sounds that we can make with our own voices and matching those to the creatures that we might encounter on a farm.

In another craft activity we will be modelling ponds for our ducks and talking about the habitats that ducks enjoy. Children will explore the shapes of a duck pond using modelling clay to make a comfortable place for a family of ducks to live.

We will be continuing our farm stories and looking at a number of picture books about farm animals, and singing the songs that we have been learning and enjoying that feature different animals.

We’ll also be learning to move like different farm animals and explore the different physicalities that children think farm animals might display, from a tiny excitable duckling up to a large, slow cow.

We are going to be setting up and using a ‘feely box’ where children can explore the different textures and materials they might experience on a farm.
